Change of Major

Current Texas A&M Students

Current students who are interested in changing their major to Biomedical Sciences or University Studies with a Veterinary Medicine Concentration (USVM) will be required to attend a change of major meeting during the semester in which they wish to change. Applications will be available at the meeting.

Students must complete the following paperwork:

 

Requirements to change to BIMS**

  • 12 or more graded hours completed at TAMU
  • BIMS GPA Requirement is 2.5
  • Must have less than 75 hours completed (including transfer, dual and AP credit)
  • Must attend a mandatory change of major meeting
  • A minimum of four (4) CBK courses completed; courses must have a grade of “C” or better from TAMU or a grade of “B” or better if completed at a 2-year college
  • Two (2) CBK courses must be taken in sequential semesters at TAMU (i.e., fall BIOL 111, spring BIOL 112 or spring CHEM 101/111, fall CHEM 102/112 or fall CHEM 227/237, spring CHEM 228/238)
  • CBK courses: MATH 131 or 142 or 147 or 151 or 171; BIOL 111 & 112; CHEM 101/111, 102/112, 227/237, & 228/238; PHYS 201 & 202
  • No more than two (2) semesters of not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)

Note: All math/science courses from the CBK list must have a grade of “C” or better in each course taken at Texas A&M or a grade of “B” or better in each completed course if taken at a 2-year college in order to be admitted to BIMS upper-level courses.

Requirements to change to USVM**

  • 12 or more graded hours completed at TAMU
  • USVM GPA Requirement is 2.0
  • Must have less than 95 hours completed (including transfer, dual and AP credit)
  • Must attend a mandatory change of major meeting
  • A minimum of three (3) of the following science or math courses completed (a grade of “C” or better is strongly recommended):
    • BIOL 111, 112
    • CHEM 101/111, 102/112, CHEM 227/237
    • MATH 131 or 142 or 147 or 151 or 171
  • Note: A minimum of two (2) of these courses must be taken in sequential semesters at TAMU (i.e., fall BIOL 111, spring BIOL 112 or spring CHEM 101/111, fall CHEM 102/112 or fall CHEM 227/237 spring BIOL 112)
  • No more than two (2) semesters of not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)
  • USVM is not a gateway to the BIMS degree program. Students pursuing a USVM degree are not eligible to change majors to BIMS

Note: All math/science courses from the CBK list must have a grade of “C” or better in each course taken at Texas A&M or a grade of “B” or better in each completed course if taken at a 2-year college in order to be admitted to BIMS upper-level courses.

Prospective BIMS and USVM students must attend one of the following change of major meetings and submit a change of major application (form) available at the meetings.

Change of Major Individual Sessions

If you can not make a scheduled Change of Major Meeting you may come for an individual session.

Please note if we have scheduled walk-in advising posted, BIMS/USVM major students will be seen before Change of Major students.

*Important Note about VIDI 123:

BIMS and USVM students and families,

Our offices have moved into the beautiful Veterinary Building Education Complex (VBEC). We are now in VIDI Room 123. Our phone number has not changed. It is imperative that you read and follow the instructions below. If you get lost, call 979-845-4941 and someone will meet you in LOT 24 to direct you. Maps will be posted on the windows of our old offices.

Prospective families – we encourage you to park at the MSC University Center Garage and use ROUTE 9, which stops at VIDI.

Please see transport.tamu.edu for the active bus map and use ROUTE 9, which stops at VIDI. This is the ONLY way to come. Currently there is limited paid by the hour student or visitor parking.

VETERINARY MEDICINE & BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES Change of Major Requirements –  Effective January 30, 2020

2.50 Biomedical Sciences (BIMS)

  • Must have 12 or more graded hours completed at TAMU
  • Must have no more than 75 total hours completed (including transfer, dual and AP credit)
  • Must have completed the following four (4) required CBK courses:
    • BIOL 111, CHEM 119 (CHEM 101/111), CHEM 120 (CHEM 102/112), and CHEM 227/237
    • These courses must have a grade of “C” or better from TAMU or a grade of “B” or better if completed at a 2-year college; AP/IB credits are also acceptable

  • Must have no more than 90 total hours completed (including transfer, dual and AP credit)
  • Must have completed the following four (4) required courses:
    • BIOL 111, CHEM 119 (CHEM 101/111), CHEM 120 (CHEM 102/112), and CHEM 227/237
    • A passing grade is acceptable; however, a grade of “C” or better is strongly recommended; AP/IB credits are also acceptable
